A couple of weeks ago, the GPAA contacted TVP President Ken Hannan and asked him to host an outing for ABC News reporter Alex Stone. He was interested in what was going on with the modern day Gold Rush and how it all works. Ken setup a special outing with several of the TVP club members out at one of our favorite summer locations… the East Fork of the San Gabriel River.
Alex got to see the members using pans, sluices, & high bankers which gave him a great perspective of the many ways you can look for gold. Ken got Alex into a good spot, dug some dirt, and wouldn’t you know it… gold in Alex’s first pan!
Alex sent a thank you note to Ken the following week and let him know that the story ran on over 1,000 ABC & affiliated radios stations all over the country and is currently running on the ABC News channel at Slacker.com which is an online radio service.
If you would like to hear the reports, here are the links.

The September 2011 Temecula Valley Prospectors meeting will be held on Saturday, September 10th, at 9:00 am. Our meetings are held at the Temecula Community Center located at 28816 Pujol St., Temecula CA. Everyone is welcome, so we hope to see you there!
Here are some of the things going on this month:
Item 1:
The annual club elections will be held this month.
Here are the elected positions:
- President
- Vice President
- Treasurer
- Secretary
- Claims Director
- Wagonmaster
The GPAA has agreed to provide two years of free GPAA membership to the first four positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer, & Secretary). If you are interested in holding an elected position please contact Ken Hannan (president@gpaatvp.com) no later than September 8th, 2011.
Item 2:
Have you been out Metal Detecting or Gold Prospecting this last month? Find anything? Then bring it to the meeting so we can see. All entries are voted on and the top two of each category will win a prize.
Item 3:
We have four great raffles each month (not counting the Grand Prize) that you can participate in while at the meeting. Not only is it a lot of fun (especially when you win), but it helps to support the club.
- Door Prize Raffle (Free): Just by signing in, you are entered into the Door Prize Raffle. We normally have 1 to 4 items that are given away each month.
- 50/50 Raffle ($1 per ticket): This is the easiest raffle of them all… if you win, you split (50/50) all of the money collected for the 50/50 raffle with the club. For example, if $70 is collected, then you, as the winner, get $35 and the club keeps $35.
- Gold Raffle ($1 per ticket): There are typically 3 to 4 items each month. One bag of gold concentrate to work on your panning skills and some nice gold nuggets to show your friends.
- Table Raffle ($1 per ticket): You might think… what am I going to do with a table?, but the Table Raffle is an array of items sitting on a table that the winners can choose from. There are typically 10-15 items ranging in value from a few dollars to over a hundred dollars on occasion. The nice thing about the table raffle is that you can see what is there before you purchase your tickets.
Item 4:
A new Grand Prize Raffle prize will be introduced.
Item 5:
If you are looking for prospecting gear, one of our club vendors, Legends Prospecting Supplies, will be there this month with all of the latest items for you to see and purchase.

Thanks to all of you who took the time to share your feelings through letters, emails, faxes, & phone calls to Governor Brown about the California Budget addendum that would have crushed suction dredging in California for another 5 years. That loud outcry had an impact and the Governor vetoed the legislation. The Department of Fish & Game will now be allowed to finish the study that is almost complete.
This is a small victory for prospectors throughout the state, but we need to stay on top of this issue because we aren’t out of the woods yet.
The Governor may have vetoed the legislation, but it sounds more like it was to not violate the court order rather than a support for dredging:
“While I am vetoing this language to ensure the Department is not in violation of the court order,” Brown wrote in his veto message, “I directed the Secretary of Resources to examine the program and associated polices before restarting the permit process.”
To keep yourself informed, the Sacramento Bee is a great source (www.sacbee.com).
Here are some recent articles relating to the California dredging issue.
